Machine-finished tobacco base — the standard tipping and packaging grade, specified for strength, smoothness and ink hold-out.
What it is.
Tobacco base papers are converted at some of the highest speeds in the industry, on machines that do not tolerate variation. A machine-finished grade is calendered on the paper machine to a uniform, even surface — not a high gloss, but consistent, which is what a tipping line needs when it is wrapping thousands of filters a minute.
Three properties carry the specification. Strength, because the web is narrow and running fast and a break stops the line. Smoothness, because the print has to register on a curved surface. And ink penetration resistance — the print must stay on the surface and not strike through to the face that touches the filter.
