Light Weight Coated (LWC)
Coated publication paper built to carry a lot of pages without a lot of weight — 58 to 80 g/m², 86 to 91 % opacity.
What it is.
LWC exists because magazines are posted. Every gram is a postage cost multiplied by the circulation, so the grade is engineered to deliver a printable coated surface at the lowest weight that still stops the next page reading through.
That is the tension in the specification. Opacity runs from 86 % up to 91 % — enough that a heavily illustrated page does not show through — while bulk is held around 0.84 to 0.89 cm³/g so the finished magazine stays thin on the shelf and in the mail sack.
Roughness at 2.6 to 2.8 µm PPS and smoothness at 300 seconds or better are what let it print cleanly on a heatset web at production speed. Caliper runs 49 to 71 µm across the basis weight range.
