What it is.
Medium is the fluted middle ply of corrugated board. It is not asked to be strong in the way a liner is; it is asked to hold a wave under load and to form that wave cleanly at speed and heat on the corrugator.
So the properties are different. Flat crush measures how the formed flute stands up. CMT measures the medium's own resistance to crushing before it is formed. Moisture matters more here than almost anywhere else in the box, because medium that is too dry cracks on the labyrinth and medium that is too wet flattens.
